I’ve been asked by quite a few people about makeup schools, and the ones that I go into. I’ve touched upon this subject a little bit before. Let me say this again: I’ve been to 2 makeup schools – Paramita Academy of Makeup Inc. (2008) and Complections International Academy of Makeup Artistry (2009-2010).

Today, I’m going to share with you what I think about Complections and the interview that I’ve held with the school. Some of the questions here come from readers/friends who have asked me to ask the school.

Q: What makes Complections one of the best makeup school in North America?

A: Our faculty, definitely. They have to have a minimum of 10 years experience in the industry, and prove great success. In addition, the practical work and job opportunity that the school give to the students will help the students to move along in the industry. Small class sizes allow for feedback from the instructors. Not to mention, with small class sizes, you’ll be able to get to know the instructors and your classmates which could potentially lead to job opportunities. It’s all about networking. And, our school’s President’s commitment to evolve the curriculum continuously. Oh, and not forgetting the photos that you get at the end of every class by the school photographers, which will help with your portfolio.

Q: There seems to be this “passing marks” in the school, what is the importance of marks and attendance?

A: Marks and attendance are just like expectations from the industry. Here, in Complections, we are training students to be prepared for the professional world. The consequences of losing mark is similar to the consequences of, potentially, losing your job because you are late or unprepared.

Q: What are the different courses that the school offered?

A: There’s the 6 or 8-week fashion course. 8-week fashion course include 2-week of hair styling class. There’s also a 14-week special fx and creature design course, the 26-week course, and the 32-week.

Q: For the 14-week, do they have to be a makeup artist before enrolling to the course?

A: yes, for the 14-week spfx/creature design course, they have to a makeup artist for at least a year before they can be enrolled to the class.

Q: For international students, do you provide any help for their stay?

A: For international students, the registrar office will help them to find basic accommodation on a one-on-one with Christine.

Q: You mentioned about job opportunity, do all the students from different courses get the same job opportunity?

A: For job opportunity, as soon as the students finish their fashion course, the school will send out emails notifying about job opportunities that’s been sent to the school through out their stay in school.

Q: So, the students will still received job opportunities even after they graduate?

A: yes. After the students graduate, the  6- and 8-weekers will received notifications up to 3-month, 14-weekers up to 6-month, 26-weekers up to 10-month and the 32-weekers up to 12-month.

My experience in the school:

The school is located in downtown Toronto (bloor subway, yonge-charles intersection). Easily accessible through public transportation. I lived in Hamilton, so I’ve to take the go train every morning and afternoon. Yes, the commuting part was hard at first, but I’ve gotten used to it after the first 3 weeks.

I’ve taken the 26-week comprehensive makeup artist program, which includes hair, fashion, theatre, film&tv and prosthetics (basically everything but creature design). I’ve taken fashion makeup before at Paramita Academy of Makeup Inc., so I have a little bit more advantage than my classmates, but it doesn’t mean that I didn’t learn anything. I came to the school with a mind-set that I do not know anything, so that way, I was able to learn as much knowledge as possible.

I have to say that in each course that I’ve taken, I am very satisfied with what I’ve learnt and how I can apply it to the real world. Every single instructor is amazing, and by far, the best makeup artists in the industry. No kidding! They are still active in the industry, and they are willing to share what they’ve learn in the real world with us. They are by far, one of the most humble, nicest, and talented people I’ve ever known. Each one of them taught us, not only the skills in makeup, but also skills to survive in the business.

The non-teaching staffs are amaaazing. They are friendly, and always willing to be there for us. John in the school’s store is always there to talk to me about products (because I’m a makeup junkie!), Humera at the receptionist always there to say hi/bye whenever I passed by the front door, Joy (oooh, Joy!..lol..i love her!) is always there to listen to you whenever you have troubles or just to bring her cakes (lol). Odessa always send out job opportunities, always willing to give us advice about photoshoots etc (and I always love her wardrobe collections..lol). Christine! Christine is soo patient, and always willing to help students or potential students about anything! payment, visa, permit, accommodation.

The President, Pamela (or Pam), always come out to check each class, talk to the students during lunch time to see how we are doing. Full of smile and always so friendly and nice to everyone!

I love all my instructors: Paula (hair), Jackie (fashion), Kelly (theatre), Tony (prosthetic), and Candice (film&tv). The photographers that take crazy amazing pictures and help build my portfolio: Maxime Bocken and Maja Hajduk. Love my classmates and I’ve made really good friends with a few of them.

Let’s put it in perspectives: I went there for 6-months, every weekend I always get a photoshoot. I was able to work at the IMATS show. Before I even finished school, I was asked to do Ms. Universe Canada Toronto 2010 makeup because of the job notification and during X-mas break, I was able to work with a photographer and model and we were published in an online magazine (Kismet). A job given by the school allowed me to work with the photographer over and over again, and now she just recommended me to another photographer. Some of my classmates and other students from another class offered and took me out on jobs.

I finished school 2 weeks ago, this is my schedule this week: friday, saturday, sunday: photoshoots, my schedule next week: wednesday, friday, saturday: photoshoots, sunday: bridal trial. I’ve even collaborated with Sizzle/Koi (a club in Hamilton) to open a beauty bar on friday and saturday nights.

The school PREPARES you to get job and to do your job out there. But of course, there’s so much that they can do to help you get jobs. You have to be willing to do your parts too!

I totally recommend Complections to whoever you are out there who wants to become a great makeup artist. If you’re really sure this is what you want to do, go do it! Grab your dream!

L’oreal Lash Serum

I received a package from L’oreal on my birthday (coincidence..lol). Anyways, they sent me a package of their latest product called Lash Boosting Serum. I’m pretty excited because the product promises to “strengthen, nourished and fortified” your lashes. They said that it’ll make your lashes thicker in 4 weeks.

The product said “for best result, apply twice a day”

This is my first week trying it, because I was busy withs school and all that jazz (you guys know it if you’ve been reading my blog..lol)…Anywaaays..the pictures underneath have no description. It’s just a bunch of pictures that I took to show you guys how the products look like.

The last 2 pictures showed my lashes with and without the serum.

The product is said to contain pro-keratine. If you guys don’t know, keratine is the protein that is in your hair and nails.

I’m going to give the product a try for the next 4 weeks, so I’ll be updating the review every single week and I’ll give you guys a thought about it.

The product can be used before mascara application and before you go to bed. You just need to apply it like a mascara and an eyeliner. Pretty easy. The product itself is more like a clear gel that dries. I found that the gel gets clumpy, but I just remove the excess product with my fingers. So far, I’ve no allergic reaction to it. I know when I talked to one of my mentors, he told me that some people might get allergic reaction to it. Please test it before you try it, since the eyes are a pretty sensitive area.

Hair Care

I’m sharing with all of you my hair care routine! lol..I’ve been receiving a lot of compliments about my hair from my friends. Let me clarify something first: all the pictures that are recently posted, it is my natural hair colour. I’ve a reddish undertone. I have not been colouring my hair for 1.5years now. Most of the old colour is gone by now.

So, my hair care routine consists of:

1) Washing my hair daily – i know some people believe in washing their hair once in a while, but I just can’t do it. My hair gets really oily and I feel yucky. I always wash my hair once a day.

2) Fav. shampoo that I swears by: tre semme shampoo AND conditioner. I use a lot of conditioner. I love tresemme shampoo and conditioner. I usually use the moisture rich (blue letters).

3) Air dry: after I wash my hair, I let it air dry most of the days. If I need to go out, then I’ll blow dry – blast it with hot air till it’s dry, then cool air to cool it down

4) straightener – i do use straightening iron to add volume to my hair. My 2 faves are: chi flat iron and GHD iv styler. GHD IV styler is the one that I use all the time. It’s by far the best investment I’ve ever made. It makes my hair look smooth and silky, and if used properly can add tons of volume to my hair. Chi is a good cheaper alternative to it

I don’t use products on my hair. I like my hair clean. I don’t use heat protector etc on my hair either. I use GHD IV styler almost everyday for 3 years already…It doesn’t destroy my hair. I don’t have any tricks to keeping my hair looking healthy and silky..=)..may be a thanks to my genes..hahaha..=)

Cherry Red

Wooow..I’ve been updating for 3 days consecutively! =D..lol..anyhow, today’s look is a red lipstick look. I’m kinda liking red lips now..lol..I’m not normally a lipstick kind of girl, but I’ve a different attitude towards red lips over the years..=D

Anyways, I thought I’d post this one up for all the ladies who want to stand out from the crowd. Tomorrow is FRIDAY already! =D..May be you’ll wear this for a night out tomorrow..;)

Spring Look #2

How’s my readers todaaaay?? Today’s look is more of a neutral look with a pop of colour. This look (without the eyeliner), is what I’ll normally wear for a day makeup. I think I’ve featured this look before. I like adding a bright eyeliner on top of the eye makeup just to make it more interesting. I’m not one who’ll go out with bright eyeshadows usually, so I like adding a surprise to the look by wearing bright color eyeliner.

For the eyeliner, you can wear any colours you like. I’m using green here just because I haven’t been using that eyeliner for a long time.

Anyhoow! Let’s get the tutorial started! I’ve prepped my face with MAC Mineralized Cream Foundation (amaazing foundation btw).

Spring look #1

So! I’m done with my makeup school. Now, I can finally update my website regularly again..lol..well, the weather has been pretty nice lately, so I decided to start doing a spring/summer look. Today’s look is very colourful, very light. My inspiration is from the michael kors runway look that i’ve done before, but I made it my own and make it a little bit more lighter. I wore this look to watch Alice in Wonderland with my sis..=D

Anyhow, enjoy the tutorial!

Products used:

Foundation – MUFE HD foundation

Powder – MAC mineralized powder

Eyeshadows – MAC Chrome, MAC free to be, MAC Vibrant Grape

Eyeliner – MAC Kohl liner in smolder

Mascara – Dior Iconic

Blush – NARS Orgasm

Lipgloss – Prescriptives colourscope in Sassy

So I bought the mascara out of curiosity. Tried it on in class, and it’s ok..pls take a look at the pics below for a before and after

This is what they say in their website (http://www.rimmellondon.com/Us/products/eyes/product.aspx?id=280):

One coat of LYCRA® Lash Extender Mascara stretches and extends even difficult lashes for an impresive high performance result with 14 hour curl hold. A New high-adhesion, quick dry LYCRA® formula delivers smudge-proof, smear-proof and flake-proof wear for girls on the go.

Verdict:

One coat is definitely not enough! It doesn’t give a lot of product on the lashes. I think I coat mine with 2-3 times. Curling power is ok, lengthening power is ok..overall it’s just an OK mascara..nothing special..no volume..I feel that there are other mascaras that are better than this 1 out there, so why spend the $$ in the OK mascara?

disclaimer: It is my personal opinion and I am by no means an expert in this. I do not get paid/endorsed by Rimmel, merely an individual stating her personal opinion

CoverFX cream foundation

Hello everyone! Finally I have the chance to update my blog. Currently I’m in the bus going back to Hamilton after working on the Daffydil Unbecoming Doctors musical by med students at U of T (time: 11.30pm)

Anyways! I’m updating thru’ my phone (yay to technology!),so I hope quality isn’t that bad.

I’ll be showing you how I used my CoverFX cream foundation since some of you had sent me emails asking about it. I really love coverfx foundation especially since they are made for sensitive and/or problematic skin. It’s very pigmented, so a LITTLE goes a LONG WAY

So, I’ll scoop out a little product with a spatula to the top of my hand. This will warm up the product. Then I add a little bit of my moisturizer and mix the 2 products with the spatula. Since the foundation by itself isn’t so emolient/creamy,the moisturizer, I found, makes the foundation softer and workable. You might have to add more (start with little) until the desired consistency. The warmth of your hand also help to make it workable.

Then you can apply it with sponge or brush. I personally like using a sponge. The key when applying it is BLENDING and sponge is a great tool for it. You might want to damp your sponge if your skin doesn’t need a lot of coverage.

I hope you guys find this useful!

Products used:

CoverFX cream foundation, La Roche Posay Effaclar H moisturizer, spatula.

Special thanks to Ana – hand model…:P

V-day Fuchsia/Purple

So, after soo many days of thinking what tutorial should I do for another v-day look, I decided to use parfait armour and stars ‘n rockets from MAC. There’s a lot of pink/purple look by other makeup gurus, but because I’m asian, pink isn’t all that flattering to my skin tone.

Please, my oriental friends, try to stay away from pink as much as possible. It’s not a great colour for our skin tone. Rather than using pink, I used MAC Stars ‘n Rockets because it has a hint of purple in it. If you don’t know yet, this eyeshadow is a duochrome, meaning that it has 2 colours to it. Depending on what base colour you used, the colour will shows up differently. For example, if you use a black base and then apply stars ‘n rockets, you’ll get a purple colour, but if you apply a neutral base/no base, you’ll get a fuchsia colour with a hint of purple to it.

Anyways! Long story short, let’s get the tutorial started!

I did my eyes first, then my face just because I feel like doing it. lol..I prefer to do my face first then my eyes though.

Highlight – MAC Ricepaper

Brows – Anastasia Brow Wiz

Eyeliner – Kat Von D liquid liner in Trooper
