Shu Uemura Brave Beauty Competition

Hello everyone!!! Sorry I haven’t been updating my blog this week. I was busy since I entered Shu Uemura Brave Beauty Competition. So, if you haven’t been following me on Instagram (you should, btw..what are you waiting for? Go check out my Instagram to get the latest update!), I’d just do a quick recap of what happened. Last month, I was browsing on Instagram, and saw Shu Uemura Indonesia was organizing a makeup competition. I actually didn’t want to join for many reasons, but first and foremost because I’ve a case of stage fright. N, my sister, and Franky (fellow blogger) kept encouraging me to do it, since I’ve nothing to lose anyways. This was my first makeup competition!

So, I submitted my face chart, portfolio and went on my merry ways. I actually didn’t even remember I entered the competition. Couple days after Eid, I received an email and a call notifying that I was one of the top 10 finalists for Shu Uemura Brave Beauty competition. Fast forward couple days later, I had to attend a briefing for the competition (Monday, Aug. 11), and the competition itself was on the following day (Tuesday, Aug. 12). The other 9 finalists were nice and friendly. They’ve entered makeup competition prior to this one. So, really, I was the only one with no prior experience. Oh well, there’s always a first time for everything right?!

Makeup station at backstage

Photo above is my makeup station back stage. We were given 2.5hr to do the models’ complexion (skincare, base, foundation), hair, nails, and wardrobe. Nails were provided by Feliz Nail Art, and wardrobe was provided by Tex Saverio. My model is Juanita Haryadi and she’s amazing!

For the competition, we are not allowed to bring our own makeup products, except for our makeup brushes and lashes. All makeup and skincare products are given by Shu Uemura. So this competition was interesting since I don’t actually owned any Shu Uemura eyeshadows. I entered this competition without having any knowledge on how the eyeshadows going to blend and such. On the briefing day, we were given times to know the products and play with the colors. However, swatching and looking at colors are quite different from actually using it on the eyelid. Not to mention, there was no eyeshadow primer at all from Shu. That was quite a concern amongst the finalists.

I, personally, was happy to actually join the competition. I am not a competitive person to begin with, and as I’ve mentioned before I’ve a case of a stage fright. I was like super nervous about this competition. I’ve never entered a competition before, so this was my first experience. I’m glad I did it because I managed to meet amazing makeup artists, and became friends with them. They are a bunch of great people, and we talked, shared and laughed together. We had tons of fun, and no one was mean to anyone. It was wonderful!

Also, we get to meet the legendary Kakuyasu Uchiide (Shu Uemura International Artistic Director), as well as internationally acclaimed Fashion designer Tex Saverio. Why is Tex Saverio there? That’s because Tex Saverio collaborates with Shu Uemura! 2 legendary people, and I was in between! Mr. Uchiide was like “oh come, you should stand in the middle”..OMG I ALMOST DIED!

I’ve met Rae Morris, now I’ve met Kakuyasu Uchiide! Dreams do come true! Master makeup artists! They are so friendly, humble, down-to-earth, and passionate about their work.

Mr. Uchiide’s interpretation of Brave Beauty on the models

So, we were given 30 minutes ONLY to finish up our eye, lips and cheeks makeup. I barely had enough time to complete the look. My hands were shaking throughout the entire time. I think at one point I wasn’t even sure what I was doing. I was too nervous! Stage fright I tell ya! Anyways, 30 minutes was up and that was it!

The winners were announced – Stephanie won 2nd place (best makeup show), and Mirtha won 1st place (grand prize). I didn’t feel much disappointment. I thought they deserved to win since their makeup results were quite elaborate. I knew I wasn’t going to win because I think I have a different interpretation of what Brave Beauty was.

Anyways! I was very happy I entered this competition. I’ve made new friends, I gained experience, and I’ve definitely learn to manage my stage fright. I’ve met great people, and for me it was more than enough! I didn’t even expect to be in the top 10, so that in itself was already quite amazing!

So, I’d like to say thank you to everyone who have cheered and supported me throughout the whole time!

Trend Trunk (and GIVEAWAY!)

In case you missed it, a Canadian fashion start-up company named Trend Trunk (www.TrendTrunk.com) made its national television debut by battling the Dragons on Dragons’ Den this past week. You can watch the video here: http://www.cbc.ca/dragonsden/pitches/trend-trunk)

And while they made a deal for $200,000 for 50% equity on the show with everyone’s favourite Dragon, Mr. Wonderful, the deal ultimately did not go through (See more here: https://www.trendtrunk.com/Dragons-Den), but they seemed to have caught the attention of women across Canada who all suffer from the same problem – too many clothes & nothing to wear.

Before we get into what Trend Trunk is all about, I want to let you guys know that Trend Trunk has teamed up with Kirei Makeup for a GIVEAWAY! Wanna know more about it? Rules and regulations are at the bottom of the post!

1. What is Trend Trunk?

Trend Trunk is a social marketplace where you can buy, sell, and donate amazing new and pre-loved fashion in a fun and simple way.  Our aim is to inspire and collaborate with the fashion-minded and budget-conscious community in a trustworthy environment. We believe that one person’s lonely wardrobe is another’s true love! If you’ve got items you’re not in love with anymore, you can ‘cash in your closet’ and use those funds to shop a users’ closet whose style you love, donate those funds to your favourite charity, or get the funds deposited directly into your bank account.
Trend Trunk aims to help you:

  •   Make money by cashing in your closet of all those stylish and fashionable items you have tucked away
  • Save money by shopping fellow members’ closets full of brand new to pre-loved styles they love
  • And look good doing it!

2. How did you guys come up with the idea of Trend Trunk?

Trend Trunk evolved from an existing gift card exchange company. The idea was that our customers could swap a gift card that they weren’t going to use for another type of gift card. We found that our customers were mainly swapping fashion related gift cards because they are very particular. It got us thinking of a new direction that we could take the business. The idea of having a consumer to consumer marketplace exclusively for fashion was born. We built Trend Trunk from the gift card exchange companies platform so it was a smoother transition than if we had to build it from scratch.

3. What is the best way to use Trend Trunk?

Our members come to our marketplace for many different reasons. Some of our members come to Trend Trunk as a way earn money from their guilty habit of buying too many items and never getting around to wearing them. Others come to Trend Trunk to save money on fashionable items that others no longer use (last week we sold a brand new $500 Coach bag for $100 in less than 1 minute after it was posted). While others come to Trend Trunk to get inspired by all the different fashionable closets that our members are creating.

4. How does it feel to be standing in front of the Dragons?

I was very nervous about how the Dragons were going to react after I jumped out of the closet. Luckily they were receptive to it and it caught their attention. My actual business pitch was about 30 minutes however they only showed about 2 minutes of it. I had a great feeling of pride and excitement to have had the opportunity present my business in front of all the Dragons.

5. As we all know, you’ve closed the deal and so how will that change Trend Trunk?

Yes we closed a deal with Kevin O’Leary for 50% of our company in exchange for $200,000 equity in our business. That is what they showed on TV. What really happens is that only 1 of every 10 deals on the show actually gets finalized. You can imagine that making a 6-figure business deal in 20 minutes is not reality. After going through the post show negotiations, the offer ultimately wasn’t a good fit. We decided to put our current and future customers in the Dragons’ chair and have started a crowdfunding campaign in order to raise the necessary funds to take Trend Trunk to the next level. We are asking the public to help fund us while giving them some excellent rewards in the process. You can find out more about it here: https://www.trendtrunk.com/Dragons-Den

Sebastian Gunawan Mod Muse 2014

Last night, Wiwin and I had the pleasure of attending Sebastian Gunawan Mod Muse 2014 Fashion Show at Hotel Mulia. I just want to take the time to give Bryna Lie a shout out. All thanks to her that I was able to watch the show, and even able to bring Wiwin (and did her makeup mwahahahaha) along. We are all childhood friends, so it was a good little reunion (again :P). So, again a big huge hug, loads of kisses and thanks to this sexy hot mama!

sebastian gunawan mod muse 2014

Sebastian Gunawan is a famous Indonesian-based fashion designer. His design is very popular amongst Indonesians. He’s actually Bryna’s uncle! He’s not only known in Indonesia, but also very prolific in the world’s stage. Anyways, below is a quote from his website about his profile:

A life dedicated to inspire and be inspired by women seems to be a pre(-)destined matter for Sebastian Gunawan. Born in a tight knit family with 4 sisters, his interest in style started early thanks to his elegant mother’s natural flair in fashion. This led to a discovery that the young Sebastian Gunawan is gifted in fashion illustration. From mere hobby, this talent was then honed by a degree in fashion design at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising in Los Angeles. The glamorous air of Hollywood seems to be a starting point for his design inspirations, something that was later honed at Milan’s famed Instituto Morangoni. It was here when he met his wife and creative partner, Cristina Panarese. He and Cristina then came back to Jakarta, Indonesia and launched his line, Sebastian Gunawan in 1993. In the same year represented Indonesia at the prestigious “Young Fashion Designers Contest”. His distinctive style was later recognized internationally when he received the First Award at the “International Apparel Federation World Young Designer Award 2004” in Barcelona, Spain. A year later he was invited to show his collection at “Moda in 3D” in Rome, Italy.

Sebastian continues to grow his presence by launching two ready to wear lines. The first one, “Red Label by Sebastian & Cristina” and “Votum”. He cites his family and the ongoing desire to make women look their most beautiful as the driving force behind his never ending inspirations.

Anyhow, the show took place in Hotel Mulia (Jakarta) Ballroom, and can we all just take a look at how amazing the decoration is. I mean, that runway backdrop was so gorgeous! The event showcased cocktail dresses and evening gowns, as well as 3 bridal gowns. Everything was super pretty. Lots of pretty colors ranging from gold to blue and silver. I especially love the first few dresses, which has a lot of orange/blue combo (not in pictures) . I definitely love all the 50s inspired skirts and dresses.

Besides the amazing clothes, I have to mention how edgy the hair is. The models get a very tight braid along the scalp, almost like a corn braid, but in bigger section. The makeup is smoky eyes, I think with silver on the lid, I can’t say for sure. I know there were a lot of falsies involved, though!

Refer to the photo below: I’ve fallen heads over heels for that skirt with the pocket (second from the right, model has her hand inside the pocket). The model next to her (the one with her hand on her hip, third from the right), she has the best walk! I’m no expert, but she rocked that stage!
